Most of us are peaceful, law-abiding people. We mean no one any harm and, when we have disputes with our fellow citizens, we pursue legal avenues for dealing with them. That’s how we solve our problems in a civil society, right?

But what about when society is no longer “civil”?

Urban Survival And The Danger Next Door

Consider a natural disaster. While a power outage or a flood is no big deal for the first day or two, it can quickly dissolve into anarchy. This is where the “prepared” and the “unprepared” clash.

And with the breakdown of the infrastructure we depend upon to keep us safe (and fed) in shambles, the stress on our fellow citizens may force you to face your friends and make some hard decisions.

Neighbors Gone Wild

The fact is, all human beings are hard-wired to survive at all costs. Thrust your typical “civilized” human being into the middle of civil unrest, especially when his (or her) family and loved ones are endangered, and he will quickly learn to be ruthless to protect those who depend on him for survival.

Bottom line, when the shelves of the local grocery store have been ravaged by rioters and your friends are hungry, things can turn ugly. Two simple steps can help you stay out of trouble and avoid future skirmishes post-disaster…

Stock Up Now With “Crisis Items”

Look, first you have to protect your own, right? During a disaster, certain items are going to leave the store shelves very quickly. When they’re gone, so is the civil politeness you may normally see between friendly neighbors.

Know which food times sell out first in a disaster and stock up on these. They will be your most immediate food source and help you wait out the disaster in relative comfort while others are hungrily waiting for government aid and clawing at each others’ throats.

This is the most definitive list of items that sell out during a crisis.

Can You Keep Your Disaster Plans A Secret?

Once you’re stocked up, keep the knowledge of your possession of these items to yourself. “Love thy neighbor” is a great way to live your life, but hunger has a way of turning “Can I borrow a screwdriver” into “Give me your last box of Froot Loops NOW!”.

It’s not likely your neighbors are as prepared as you are and you have to take care of your family first. Keeping your prepper plans a secret actually helps keep friends as “friends”.

While it’s nice to think that everyone will pull together as friendly neighbors during times of crisis, it’s advisable to live by the watchwords, “Hope for the best but plan for the worst”.

When it comes to protecting those you love, this old adage will serve you well.

In preparing for disaster scenarios, many “preppers” overlook a very important survival factor.

Specifically, so much of our emergency preparations for urban survival are built around long-term, that we fail to take into account a plan to survive the social chaos it can cause.

You see, the very conditions of a natural disaster (which include a loss of power and other infrastructure as well as a breakdown of traditional authority and the checks and balances these exert on citizen behavior) exert great stress on our fellow citizens.

They may become desperate, or they may act out because they feel their lives are in danger.

In fact, we’ve seen it time and time again; from Katrina to even recent protests…

During An Urban Survival Situation,
All Rules Are Off!

It’s actually completely natural that during an urban survival situation, some of your fellow neighbors will come to the conclusion that “anything goes”.

Frankly, they’re right!

Consider what happens when a natural disaster like an earthquake or snow storm damages the power grid where you live.

You can “survive” a power outage without ever leaving your home, and do it more or less in comfort.

When your “urban survival plan” consists of sitting at home relying on generator power or fuel-operated lamps for light and heat, you’re doing pretty well for yourself.

If the power outage lasts a few hours or even a few days, the greatest difficulty you may face is boredom.

But what happens if the outage goes on for longer?

When Natural Disaster Becomes
Something Much Worse…

As the services you’ve come to rely on continue to remain out of commission, your local stores don’t get replenished… day-to-day routines aren’t restored…
grocery store shelves start to empty out…

Stress takes its toll.

Tempers flare and, in the absence of authority as local protective services are strained, the wilder elements of society become emboldened.

Just like that, a natural disaster has become a desperate state of total anarchy.

That chaos could riots, roving bands of looters and home invaders, arson, or worse.

How To Prepare For Social Chaos

What’s important to remember is that having the supplies to survive a natural disaster, such as batteries, flashlights, a stock of food, blankets, and so on, is critical for protecting yourself and those you love during an emergency…

…but it’s NOT the same as being prepared for social chaos!

A natural disaster produces the environment for failure of infrastructure.

Social chaos, on the other hand, produces an environment for the unleashing of a human threat, and it is this human threat that you must be prepared to avoid or to combat.

Only by preparing to face this human threat can you truly prepare yourself for urban survival.

Your choice of weapons… your ability to use hand-to-hand combat… knowing
how to escape and evade a mob or riot… are all specialty skills that you should be planning for to ultimately protect yourself and those you love.
